The idea for this SIG literally came up in the Lahore GBM while I was showing off my iphone to the green-eyed-with-envy Junaid! :D

  1. its a good thing ,it gives you three facilities in one object but it is not the best .i read some where that it has slow processor etc. nokia N96 and sony ericsson XPERIA are far advance and better than this

  2. You know what! I used to hate iphone, completely based on what I had been reading on the web. I had been following it for probably as long as its hyped existed, and I would compare it with every possible mobile, and then argue that this is a lousy mobile.

Until… until I used it. It took under 2 minutes to change my opinion.

It can not be “understood” as a mobile. Its a complete platform, and lets not forget that it is still version 1, from a company that never existed in the mobile space. Ever!

No other mobile manufacturer has captured the hearts and minds with their first product.

I dont know N96 and Xperia. But I have to say this: I have been a great Ericsson fan ever since it used to b just Ericsson. P800, P910, W800i, amazing phones. But, I am noticing a steady decline in their leading edge. P990 was a huge disappointment.

But, there is something else I would like to share: Did you ever experience “palm” when it reigned supreme? It was a phenomenon. You know why? Because it had, at the last time I checked (4 years ago) over 60,000 software for every conceivable purpose, ranging from free to download, to professional level, very expensive ones. Today, DHL boys carry space-age looking gadgets in their holster to scan the packages at the time of delivery, and those gadgets have palm technology at its heart.

There have been tons of PDAs since palm arrived. From HTCs to imate umate, to what not. But, after palm, iphone is the first one (please correct me if I am wrong on this) to have an avalanche of software rolling out at the same pace, and rising.

iphone did not have the option forward SMSes received from someone. It did not have the option to send a contact stored in your address book to someone else. Its camera did not have zoom and other common functions. You could not search for a contact or an SMS. But, independent people came forward and wrote free software that I downloaded and all these missing features are now history. iphone did not video camera. Guess what? Someone is developing the software. Its not smooth. But hey. Its coming up. Its builtin YouTube software does not allow to download the videos. Then came along MxTube. Search and save your favorites and enjoy them over and over again.

I can go on and on. The point is this: Which other mobile gives you so much for so little? And allows you to build enhancements to its basic unit? And is still in its first year? Come version 2, and it is an open debate things will zoom to. Apple has already released its roadmap but I have not yet read it.

    Back to you sir!

  3. I say all mensans should get a mensa sponsored :P iphone… with a special mensa casing… :P

  4. Greetings to the Gadgets SIG from the Problem-Solvers SIG!

    Here is what I have:

    1) a Samsung YP-U2J digital audio player,
    with a 2.0 USB port

    2) an SD/MMC/RS-MMC, with a 2.0 USB port
I have put my Pimsleur Russian I mini-chip
into this (item #1 doesn’t have anywhere
    to insert a mini-chip).

These two items do not connect with each other.

My goal is to be able to play this language-learning mini-chip, then, just remove it, and insert a language-learning mini-chip for a different language, and play that.

I think that Pimsleur might want me to download my Russian I mini-chip to my computer, and then download that, to the Samsung YP-U2J. But, my computer is an older computer, a Pentium, and I think that I’ve downloaded too many additional programs, for it to have enough memory left, to do that. Plus, I don’t want to. I want to be able to just insert a language-learning mini-chip, play it, then take that one out, and insert a language-learning mini-chip for a different language, and play that. Easy and quick.

Would it be possible for me to mail this to you all, for you to look at, and see what you can do? Maybe I need to buy a completely new mini-chip player, of some type.

I am not a computer person, or an electronics gadgets person.

Thanks very much for any help you can give,
    shukran,
    Pat
